No Woman, No Cry: Help Mothers Around the World

A woman dies every 90 seconds from pregnancy complications—90% of those deaths are preventable. As a daughter and a mother myself, discovering this statistic floored me. Many of us live in a world where health care is at the very least accessible. Pregnant women in the United States, Guatemala, Bangladesh and Tanzania face impossible obstacles which often result in death during pregnancy or birth. Shortage of medical workers, obstructed labor, infection, lack of income and transportation to hospitals are some of the many causes of maternal mortality.

Every Mother Counts is a non-profit campaign to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction worldwide. As Mother’s Day approaches, what better way to celebrate the women in your life than with a gift that gives back? Enjoy cocktails, a silent auction full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, a stunning runway show and a seated dinner—all while listening to the DJ talents of New York designer Timo Weiland.
All proceeds from the evening will benefit Craft Alliance’s exhibition, education and outreach programs which make it possible for people in the St. Louis community to be exposed to art on many levels—from students working in metal studios for the first time to exhibiting artists creating installations.

Checkmate: Harry Benson Photography Exhibit Coming to STL

Photojournalist Harry Benson has snapped a varied mix of subjects in beautifully candid moments—Elizabeth Taylor, 11 American presidents (Eisenhower to Obama), the Beatles, Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson have all been on the other side of his astute lens. Some of Benson’s most telling and captivating work was in the company of the legendary and press-shy chess champion Bobby Fischer.

The extremely guarded Grandmaster selected Benson as the only person who would have private access to him during the 1972 World Chess Championship in Iceland. A rare look into their journalistic friendship and the man who Benson calls “the most fascinating and eccentric person I have ever photographed” will be exhibited at the World Chess Hall of Fame from March 9—August 12, 2012 at 4652 Maryland Avenue in the Central West End. All Eyes on the Runway: MAC for Zac Posen

The New York shows inspire on many levels—in terms of style, creativity, fashion and the art of makeup, this is where it all goes down. The Fall 2012 season does not disappoint—especially in the case of Zac Posen who sent a re-envisioned version of the traditional Geisha down the catwalk. Here’s how expert MAC Cosmetics artists created the glam eyes (all with MAC products as noted below):

Bare canvas pot—blend over the entire eyelid
Fascinating eye kohl—applied through the upper lashline and extended outwards
Light touch pressed pigments (available in fall)—swept across eyelids
Smolder eye kohl—applied through the waterline of lower lashes, and then extended outwards to elongate eyes with 266 small angle brush
Expensive pink eyeshadow—shaded through the crease of the eye
Haux eye shadow—shaded through the inner crease and brow
Lingering eye brows—shapes and sculpts brows
